Metrics Measured
Key Findings
FAQ Schema Provides 2.7x Citation Boost
Sites with properly implemented FAQ schema got 2.7x more citations than sites without it — even after controlling for content quality and domain authority. It's the single highest-impact change you can make.
Content Length Matters: 2,000+ Words Optimal
Articles over 2,000 words got 2.1x more citations than articles under 500 words. But longer isn't always better — the sweet spot is 2,000–3,500 words. Past that, the gains level off.
| Content Length | Avg Citation Rate | Avg Position |
|---|---|---|
| <500 words | 23% | #4.2 |
| 500-1,000 words | 31% | #3.8 |
| 1,000-2,000 words | 42% | #2.9 |
| 2,000-3,500 words | 58% | #2.1 |
| 3,500+ words | 51% | #2.4 |
Industry Benchmark: SaaS Dominates, E-commerce Lags
There's wide variation in AI Visibility Scores across industries. SaaS/Technology companies sit at the top with a median score of 62. E-commerce is at the bottom with 36 — a 26-point gap that represents a real competitive opportunity.
Author Credibility Signals Increase Citations by 1.8x
Sites that used Person schema for authors, had real bio pages, and kept attribution consistent got 1.8x more citations than sites with a generic "Team" byline. AI platforms respond to credibility signals. Give them something to trust.
ChatGPT Dominates, But Perplexity More Selective
ChatGPT drives 48% of all citations but accepts lower-accuracy sources. Perplexity accounts for only 22% of citations — but it's far more selective. Get cited there and you're pulling from a high-trust pool.
| Platform | Citation Share | Avg Accuracy | Selectivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 48% | 82% | Low |
| Perplexity | 22% | 94% | High |
| Gemini | 18% | 87% | Medium |
| Claude | 12% | 91% | Very High |

How was this benchmark study conducted?
We analyzed 500 websites across 12 industries between November 2025 and January 2026. Based on our 500-website analysis: 0-25 is Poor (needs immediate optimization), 26-50 is Below Average (significant room for improvement), 51-75 is Average (competitive but not dominant), 76-90 is Good (strong visibility), and 91-100 is Excellent (market leader). The median score across all industries is 47.
