Research Methodology

Sample Selection

  • 500 websites selected across 12 industries
  • Mix of traffic levels: 100 high-traffic (1M+ monthly), 200 mid-traffic (100K-1M), 200 low-traffic (<100K)
  • Geographic diversity: 60% US, 25% EU, 15% other regions
  • Domain age: All sites >1 year old (established web presence)

Testing Process

  • 50-100 queries per site: Industry-specific questions
  • 4 platforms tested: ChatGPT (GPT-4), Perplexity, Gemini Pro, Claude 3.5
  • Data collection: Nov 2025 - Jan 2026 (8 weeks)
  • Total queries: 25,000+ tested across all sites

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI Visibility Score?

An AI Visibility Score measures how often a website gets cited by AI platforms (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude) when users ask relevant questions. The score combines citation frequency, ranking position, accuracy, and platform diversity into a single 0-100 metric.

How was this benchmark study conducted?

We analyzed 500 websites across 12 industries between November 2025 and January 2026. For each site, we tested 50-100 relevant queries across all 4 major AI platforms, measuring citation rate, ranking position, accuracy score, and identifying patterns in schema markup, content structure, and technical implementation.

What is a good AI Visibility Score?

Based on our 500-website analysis: 0-25 is Poor (needs immediate optimization), 26-50 is Below Average (significant room for improvement), 51-75 is Average (competitive but not dominant), 76-90 is Good (strong visibility), and 91-100 is Excellent (market leader). The median score across all industries is 47.

Which industries have the highest AI visibility?

SaaS/Technology companies have the highest median AI Visibility Score (62), followed by Professional Services (58) and Healthcare (54). E-commerce has the lowest median score (36), with Local Businesses at 41 and Manufacturing at 43.

What factors most strongly correlate with high AI visibility?

The top 5 factors are: (1) FAQ schema implementation (2.7x more citations), (2) Content length over 2,000 words (2.1x boost), (3) Person schema for authors (1.8x boost), (4) Third-party citations (1.6x boost), and (5) Regular content updates (1.5x boost).
